With the current period of anticyclonic gloom, at the suggestion of a colleague, I've written a quick tool to help analyse the current spell for individual locations and put it into its climatological context. You can filter by month, and select data from a huge range of stations (ones reporting to the present day, and closed ones too).

You can now access my real-time UK radiosonde climatology, which has been a huge piece of work spanning several months on and off, from the UK section of the site (UK->Radiosonde).
There's far too much in there to do it justice, so I recommend exploring the section (and the links on the left hand side) to see what you can find!
I've added a heatwave calendar which allows you to see the distribution of heatwaves (as defined by '91-'20 Met Office county thresholds) through this current year and all years going back to 1865 (although not many sites reporting back then!).
There's also statistics such a heatwave coverage (percentage of sites reporting heatwave conditions as a proportion of all available sites each day), longest heatwave duration and maximum temperature in the heatwave.
Finally, you can select "All Years" to see how the number of heatwave days per year has changed over time.
The link is in the UK->Summary Maps->Yearly Summaries section, under Heatwave Calendar. Check it out!

I've almost finished revamping the UK hourly, daily, monthly and yearly graphs on my pages, but they are complete enough to launch now in Beta phase.
Use the UK -> Graphs links on the blue and green Menus to access, and then the links on the right hand side to view all of the different types.
Monthly/Yearly Summaries are now under the "Tables" Section of the green UK menu (this section overall still needs work but the Summaries have been upgraded).

As part of a site overhaul I've spent the past few evenings re-doing my observations displays, and connecting it up to my seamless hourly obs database.
The new version has an "in-page" and a "full-screen" version, and you can at a glance see obs data for a number of parameters, as far back as the hourly data in the Met Office MIDAS dataset goes.
Check it out, and please do feedback any bugs or suggestions as I never feel (particuarly with my lack of any formal web design/coding skills) that these things are ever complete or perfect! - roostweather@gmail.com
I've made some big improvements to my daily, monthly, and all-time station temperature record maps, combining 12 maps into 1 and connecting it to my seamless database of obs from 1853 to the present day. Over 1500 sites, both current and closed stations.
You can find it by going to UK -> Climate Maps -> Extremes (on the left hand side)

Bringing together a number of data sources I currently hold on the site, I've set up a UK windstorms database.
You can view and filter for all Western Group named storms since the inception of the "Name Our Storms" project in 2015, or you can view the whole database including a number of notable past storms.
More storms will be added in the near future, along with continued improvements! Don't know why I do it to myself...
I've added a page which allows the user to look at the state of the stratospheric temperature and winds (as analysed by GFS) over the past 30-days, in map form.
Plots are kindly taken from Zac Lawrence's great StratObserve.com site.

I've just added a new clip called "Canadian Wildfire Smoke" to my Lapse Library Featured Clips page - head over to the Timelapse page to check it out!
In collaboration with Dan Holley, I've developed a 1991-2020 climatology of wind directions for all observing sites in the Met Office MIDAS database which cover this period.
These climatologies have then been used to calculate subset climatologies for other parameters, for example daily mean cloud cover, as a function of wind direction.
Check out all the data using the link below, this should take you to a map which will allow you to pinpoint a site, click on the icon to get a popup with a link to the site data page.
To find the map, go to UK->Climate Graphs->Station Monthly Climates (on the left hand side)

Having now fully built a version of the Met Office MIDAS database on my system, supplemented for the final bit by SYNOP reports, I've now got a dataset of observations which seamlessly spans the time period 1853-present day.
I'm now in the process of connecting up all my maps/graphs to this database, and then filling in the gaps for climatologies etc that I don't have yet (eg pressure, humidity, etc)
This will take quite a while, but as a start I've improved the max/min temperature anomaly maps, which you can check out using the links below.
I've added the option to display the yearly sunshine summaries by "% theoretical daily/monthly max" in order to better compare months across the seasons.
A bit of fun anyway!
I've just added a new clip called "South West peninsular convergence" to my Lapse Library Featured Clips page - head over to the Timelapse page to check it out!
I've now added monthly, seasonal and annual sunshine climatologies for all sites in the MIDAS dataset, as well as anomaly and percentile maps to the UK Climate section of the site. The graphs can be reached by clicking the links in the maps.
Make sure to read the detailed description of the methods and caveats below each map and graph. Anomalies and percentiles will update in real time, climatologies will be updated on a semi-regular basis.
This was quite a large undertaking both in the coding and the data analysis, so if you spot any bugs or problems please let me know!

I've added time series of UKP rainfall data to my climate pages, so you can now see daily rainfall amounts and anomalies, for months, seasons, and years going all the way back to 1931! There is also a plot of "cumulative" anomaly to help with assessment of wet/dry antecedent conditions.
The data should, unlike the similar HadUK Grid data, update daily, and is available by visiting the link below.
I've added a new subsection under the Global section of the site, called Teleconnections/Drivers.
On this page you can currently view a number of Stratospheric Polar Vortex diagnostics, following the evolution of the stratosphere and troposphere (via AO and NAO indices) in real time.
In time I'll add a number of other global indices, such as ONI, SOI, IOD, etc etc.
Hope you enjoy the data!

Update: I've now expanded this to include all combinations of annual mean record, e.g. Max Annual Mean, Min Annual Mean Max, etc..
I've coded up a plot which shows, for each calendar day, the maximum annual mean Central England Temperature.
2022 is on course to be the warmest calendar year on record, but how many other "date records" can it set? Check it out using the link below
National Climate Information Centre (UKMO) data for December 2022 have been added into both the World Climate Map, and NCIC UK Monthly Climate Explorer.
Added an option to view annual data (values and comparisons with climate) for the UK and a subset of its regions, using figures from HadUK Grid.
UK and country/regional data for December 2022 from the National Climate Information Centre is now available to view through the UK Climate Graphs pages.
I've added an option to open your plotted "custom" rainfall map in full screen, for easier browsing of rain gauge data across the UK.
Check it out by clicking the "Full Screen Mode" link in the map title, once you've plotted some data.
Check out this interactive CET anomaly "heatmap"; you can see daily CET anomalies for min, max and mean against a variety of climates, in monthly chunks and as far back as 1772! (for the daily mean CET).
Let me know if you have any questions or feedback.
I've upgraded the minimum temperature anomaly map to both calculate anomalies from MIDAS Open data prior to 2020, and with respect to the new 1991-2020 averaging period calculated for every day for each site.
This is an improvement on the previous method which interpolated from the 1981-2010 monthly averages, although it does mean that there are now less sites in general plotted on the map than before.

I've now updated the temperature summary maps (max/min temp) to bring in, where available, reports from the 09/21Z SYNOPs.
This means that the climatological day max/min (09-09Z) can be displayed - if this not available for a specific site then the max/min to 21/09Z will be displayed. If neither are available, the map will revert back to the 06-18Z max or 18-06Z min, where appropriate.
I've just published a comprehensive update to my rainfall anomaly maps, making use of >1500 site specific rainfall climatologies which I have calculated using Open MIDAS and SYNOP data.
You can now view both anomalies and percentiles for current SYNOP sites, with respect to these climates, for months, seasons, and the current/previous year.
The maps are highly customisable, you can choose to use 24 hour totals calculated from 06Z SYNOP reports, or estimated from the 6-hourly blocks to 24Z. You can choose (for the current month/season/year) whether to view statistics relative to the end of the period, or the current time. And you can filter by length of climate record - eliminating sites with <=30 year record for example.
Clicking on site will allow you to access a climograph for that site/period, and within this display you can also explore statistics for the full set of >1500 sites.
Please read the notes accompanying each plot, and if you spot anything amiss, please get in touch!
Rainfall - Monthly Anomalies,Seasonal Anomalies,Annual Anomalies
You can now view rolling means for the current season, as well as the previous other seasons on my CET tracker, compared to the warmest and coldest rolling mean CETs in the (very long) record. Check it out using the link below!
Added a little widget to the bottom of my annual CET graphs, tracking the statistics to see what is required in order to break to annual high mean CET record.
I've used Open MIDAS data to calculate hourly temperature climatologies (1991-2020) for every hour of the year.
On this map you can see how the current conditions depart from average, and I'll add a map which will show what the hourly climate figures are in due course!

I've updated my daily UK/Ireland max/min temperature tracker to be able to display data from the MIDAS Open dataset (UK only).
This brings in data going back to 1853, although the Met Office recommend only using data from after 1865, as before then Stevenson screens were not in widespread use!
Check it out using the link below.
I've added a new page which allows you to track the progress of the current month/year rolling mean Central England Temperature, compared to the 10 warmest and coldest years (either at the end of the month/year or to the current day) in the record.

Since the NCIC changed the way they issued CET data, my pages weren't picking it up properly. I've now fixed that problem and the graphs are updating daily again now, as they should!
Stats pages for Yearly Temperature and Rainfall here at the Roost have been improved by the addition of heat maps beneath the graphs, to show the daily variation within each selected year.
Updates once data has been QC'd!
You can now plot the number of times the max temperature recorded in the UK has exceeded a user selected threshold, for each year going back to 1853, courtesy of a mixture of Open MIDAS and SYNOP data.
Data before 1960 is likely rather incomplete though, so take care when using the data before this time.

Hello, I'm currently experiencing an issue rendering Leaflet maps (most of the maps on my site).
I have a fix but will not be able to deploy it immediately, sorry about that! Although it should be fixed by the end of today.
UPDATE: All maps should now be fixed, but if you come across something that doesn't work, please let me know.
The daily temperature climate maps for UK locations, and individual station graphs, have been updated to use the latest 1991-2020 derived from the MIDAS Open dataset.
Clicking on an icon or a link on the map will take you to the station's yearly temperature curves, and from that page you can also use the dropdown to select other stations of interest.
At some point I will add a map interface, for those who don't know exactly where Drumnadrochit is...

NCEI Global Summary of the Month (GSOM) data for February 2022 have been added into the World Climate Map
I've connected my daily maximum temperature map and monthly sunshine total map to my MIDAS Open database.
Still figuring out the best way to handle the differing time periods, with some stations reporting 24-hour maxima, and others 12-hour.
If you find any bugs let me know!

Today I've linked my Daily Max Gust summary map to the MIDAS dataset. This means that it now takes advantage of official QC'd data back to 1949, whilst seamlessly meshing this with UK SYNOP data from 01-2021 onwards.
I've also added a daily summary of max mean winds for each station, which makes use of the same dataset.
I intend to connect more pages with the MIDAS dataset over the coming days and weeks, as I get time!
I've just added a new clip called Hail shower in wake of Storm Eunice to my Lapse Library Featured Clips page - head over to the Timelapse page to check it out!
You can now view daily extremes compiled from official observations for temperature, rainfall, sunshine and wind for the UK and constituent countries on my daily extremes page.
Check it out!

Data on this site comes from a large range of sources, with varying amounts of quality control applied. In particular, heavy use is made of an archive of SYNOP reports dating back to 2000, which is being constantly added to from the GTS in real-time. There are no guarantees of the accuracy of these data. When quoting data, or using it in products, please use your judgment as to whether the values look sensible or not, and where possible confirm them with other sources. I accept no responsibility for errors in the data used by this site, and no liability for erroneous processing of the data due to bugs in my code, of which there are likely to be some!
That said, please enjoy my site and I hope you find it useful!
I am now hosting a live weather stream with great views over Exeter City Centre and beyond. Please check it out on the WxStreams page!
I've started a new section which shows the daily temperature anomaly for each day of the month, giving a handy visualisation of trends through the month.
It should update automatically, but it will take me some time to go back in time, and also add other elements such as rainfall and sunshine.
I've added a couple of new videos to the featured clips on the timelapse page, with some recent features of interest. Check them out!

I've now managed to get NRW rain gauge data into my custom rain gauge accumulations map, although at present the data is not quite available in real time.
I'm hoping to improve this aspect in the near future.
I've re-instated the tropical cyclone map, which had recently broken due to a change with NHC's ftp server.
It's back with a new colour scheme and can be found in its new home under the "Global" tab if the main menu.
I've updated the UK Monthly Climate Explorer with data to the end of October 2021, courtesy of the National Climate Information Centre.
I've launched a much improved version of my rain gauge display, with now has more functionality, works faster, and provides more information about what you are actually looking at.
There's also an option to filter out gauges which do not have a complete record for the time period specified.
My thanks to Tom Morgan for the ideas and motivation to improve this display. As always, feedback is welcome and if you spot any bugs please let me know.
I've re-written and re-launched my World Climate Explorer, with climate information also brought up to date (to end of September 2021).
Explore over 36.8 million climate records from around the globe!
If you spot any bugs or come across any issues/have suggestions, please get in touch.
I've added a page which allows you to visualise the monthly climate summaries for the stations offered by the National Climate Information Centre
These data will be updated monthly as NCIC make it available.
I've added a page with photos and descriptions of the various bits and pieces of weather equipment being operated here at the Roost.
I've now added estimates (post-processed from SYNOP reports) of the current month's climate (temperature, rainfall, sunshine) for the individual countries which comprise the UK.
I will get round to completing all the regions at some point, but it's quite a big piece of work!
I have recently been working on improvements to my daily anomaly graphs, particularly in regards to generating a more accurate "daily" climatology, and better estimation of the observed daily means in real-time.
I'm pretty happy now with my daily temperature anomaly estimations, I hope to expand this over the coming days to include rainfall, options to select a climate reference period for anomalies, and expand it to estimate anomalies for the different countries and regions of the UK
I've recently been working a lot on various visualisations for UK climate statistics published by NCIC, including estimations of the current figures using bias corrected SYNOP observations.
You can explore the data using the scatter plots I've produced by clicking the link below.
I've added a page which shows the maximum and minimum surface pressure for each day.
This should update daily from the SYNOP reports as they come in.
I've finally (more-or-less) finished building an integrated radar application, although these things are never truly finished.
Use the link below to try it out, and if there any problems please get in touch.
Climate data for the UK, from the National Climate Information Centre, is now available to view on the UK Climate page. Including CET, UK/regional series, and anomalies c/f 1991-2020 climate.
I've now added SYNOP data for the UK, Ireland, Channel Islands and Isle of Man dating back to 2000 into the database - nearly 40 million individual observations. Unfortunately, with it being raw data, there are a lot of coding errors etc... guess those will take a while to identify and correct.
I'm once again rebuilding my database - will hopefully soon be able to add a lot more capability as well as data going back to 2000.
You can now view the latest UK and regional monthly statistics from the Met Office, plotted by region rather than by year. See how each region compared to climatology, and also see where it ranked compared to all the other years in the series for that region.
Significantly optimised the custom rain map, which now finds and displays historic rainfall SYNOP observations in fractions of a second, rather than the few seconds previously. I'll be improving the map for the other data sources soon, and optimising other summary pages in a similar fashion as soon as I can.
Made a few changes to the tropical cyclone pages, a couple of bug fixes, and an addition of the latest (or for past tropical cyclones, the time at which it was strongest) satellite picture from NOAA.
I've added and fixed a fair amount of code in my SYNOP processing scripts, including processing daily anomalies. As a result, I'm rebuilding my databases, so historical data will not be available for a little while.
I've just added some daily max/min anomaly maps, after considering a number of ways to generate the "daily average" stats to compare against.
In the end, I've gone with linear interpolation between the monthly averages, centred upon mid-month.
I've recently added some pages which allow you to explore official UK and regional climate data from the National Climate Information Centre.
Fixed a bug in the SYNOP retrieval code which was preventing minimum temperatures for sites now reporting in BUFR but converting to TAC being ingested into the database.
Fixed some code issues with TC pages, including HURDAT Explorer.
http://starlingsroost.asuscomm.com/weather/tropical_cyclones/tc_map.php
NHC have updated the Atlantic Hurricane Database to include 2020 best tracks - now available through the Hurdat Explorer
Significantly improved the performance and load times of the UK Top 10s tables - also added Rainfall, Sunshine and mean Wind statistics.
Fixed a bug in my SYNOP retrieval routine, which was assigning 24 hour totals of 0.0mm of rain to some obs that had missing values.
Started making some changes and improvements to the layout of data tables, integrating them with the rest of the site and adding parameters. Still a lot of work to do here.
I've refreshed the Astro pages using content provided by SunCalc.org and MoonCalc.org - which provides a much better and dynamic interface than the previous system.
I've refreshed the Astro pages using content provided by SunCalc.org and MoonCalc.org - which provides a much better and dynamic interface than the previous system.
Corrected issue where setting minimum threshold for wind gust in mph queried database for wind gust in knots.
Time lapse of yesterday's thundery trough now added to the Lapse Library. Check it out using the link below.
A couple more videos have ben added to the lapse library, lenticular clouds and some convection
Two nice videos from yesterday's convective slack/variable flow regime, highlighting the vertical wind shear and the variation in the wind with time.
I've embedded the RoostWeather Twitter feed (started May 2021), which now appears on the right hand side of the front pages.
Added a couple of videos from the mesocyclone/low topped supercell which passed overhead last Tuesday afternoon.
April Monthly Summaries are now available - a cold, frosty, and very dry month.
Monthly summaries for March are now available. Temperature, rainfall, sunshine, and a few other variables can be viewed, along with anomalies compared to 1981-2010 climate.
Sunshine Data from my recently installed Blake-Larsen sensor is now feeding into the monthly stats and summary pages!
A couple of nice videos from yesterday, showing the evolution of the altocumulus layers, with standing waves followed by castellanus.
Added a graph to show UK daily max and min temperatures, derived from UK SYNOP messages (06-18Z max, and 18-06Z min). May add an option to select from NCM data in the near future
Added a multi-month temperature graph. You can now view daily temperature series (max/min) for intervals spanning several months, for example all daily max/min temperatures in 2020.
I've added a visibility map to the Current Obs section of the site, with visibility colour coded according to military colour state. Graphs of visibility (using a logarithmic scale) have also been added to the Graphs section, and you can view these by clicking on the map icons, as well as by visiting the Graphs section directly.
Temperatures some 5 to 7 Celsius colder in the south of the UK today, compared to yesterday, which also happened to be the warmest day of the year for both Scotland and Wales
Another compilation of yesterday's deep convection, likely the final day in this recent deeply unstable W to NW Polar Maritime regime.
Small change to make Wind Chill curves invisible by default - you can still click the label in the legend to plot them on the graph.
Have added a map which will plot highest gusts at each station between a start and end time - similar to the daily summaries but for a time period of your choosing
Added functionality to look at daily maximum winds/gusts across a time period of multiple months, along with a table of all occurrences of gusts above a user specified threshold.
I've just added some footage of yesterday's showers to the Featured Clips section of the Timelapse Page. Some great skyscapes yesterday in a deeply unstable Polar Maritime air mass, with mammatus and vivid rainbows post showers.
Significant improvement to retrieval times for current observations and recent observations up to 8 days old (0.1 seconds vs 30-60 seconds). Some improvements to visualisation of current observations... but still a lot of work to do on this.
Added an option to view SREW reports on the monthly rainfall summary map and graph pages. Also some small technical improvements to the monthly rainfall map itself.
Made significant changes to the layout of the homepage, to add a news section, page counter and contact page. Gauges previously on the front page now under "Current" in the menu
After several months of development, I'm finally ready to launch the website properly. So here it is! There's still plenty to do, and you can keep up with the site developments using the "Site Changes" option.
