Daily Diary The start of an incredible hot spell across the UK, with high pressure moving E, enabling the northward advection of an exceptionally hot air mass from nearby western France. Here at the Roost, clear skies overnight, and a late arrival of the hot air, allowed temperatures to drop to relatively comfortable levels. And unlike most places, a lot of unstable medium cloud (and a few drops of rain) delayed the temperature rise until the afternoon, at which point it still managed to reach 30C, the highest here since I started recording in 2020. Many other parts of Devon reached 33-35C, and 38.1C was recorded at Santon Downham. Long periods of sunshine during the afternoon, leading into a very warm night. Testament to the very hot air, winds were calm with the surface inversion not breaking until 28C was reached, thereafter a gentle S'ly wind until the evening.
