Notes for use

These summary graphics for past complete months (back to 1910, which is as far as the sunshine record goes) are created using official data from NCIC.

Anomalies with respect to climate are calculated using the 30-year climate period specified in the drop-down menu at the top of the page (currently '91-'20), whilst the categories (Mild/Cool, Wet/Dry, Near Average etc) are consistent with the terminology used in the Met Office's 1-month contingency planners forecast. "Near Average" applies if a value falls within the middle 60% of the climate period; categories otherwise named refer to the upper and lower quintiles of climate.

Rankings apply to the full period on record, for Temperature this currently goes back to 1884, Rainfall back to 1836, and Sunshine back to 1910.

Values for the current month are estimated using a bias-corrected average of SYNOP reports. These are only available for the UK and constituent countries, SYNOP coverage for individual regions is generally too low to produce meaningful results. Temperature is just the current estimated mean temperature for the month (calculated using [Tmax + Tmin]/2), whilst rainfall and sunshine values are estimated by calculating the areally averaged summation of values given on the 06Z SYNOP report, and scaling it up to the full month. So for example, if the average rainfall total reported by the halfway point in the month was 50 mm, the graphic would show 100 mm as an estimate of the final monthly total. Naturally, the estimates will become more accurate the nearer the end of the month approaches.
